How to Create a System Restore Point on a Windows Laptop (and How to Use It)

Before you start removing apps or making changes to your laptop, there’s one simple thing you should do first.

Create a system restore point.

It gives you a way to roll your system back if something breaks.

Here’s how to set it up—and how to use it if you need it.

How to Create a System Restore Point

  1. Click Start and type Create a restore point
  2. Select it from the results
  3. Under Protection Settings, select your system drive (usually C:)
  4. Click Configure
  5. Select Turn on system protection
  6. Click OK
  7. Click Create
  8. Enter a name (example: Before app cleanup)
  9. Click Create again

Done.

How to Restore Your System

If something goes wrong, you can roll your system back to that restore point.

  1. Click Start and type Create a restore point
  2. Open it
  3. Click System Restore
  4. Click Next
  5. Select your restore point
  6. Click NextFinish

Your laptop will restart and begin the restore process.

What a Restore Point Does (and Doesn’t Do)

A restore point will:

  • restore system settings
  • undo recent changes
  • help fix issues caused by installs or updates

A restore point will not:

  • delete your personal files
  • remove documents, photos, or saved data

When You Should Create One

  • before uninstalling apps
  • before installing new software
  • before making system changes

It takes less than a minute and can save you a lot of time later.

Final Thought

This is one of those small steps that makes a big difference.

If something goes wrong, you’ll be glad you took the extra minute.
